Evolution And Future Of India’s Submarine Force

India’s submarine arm has progressed from imported conventional boats to a mature force that has operated conventional, nuclear attack and nuclear ballistic missile submarines. India’s undersea force is a product of both enabling and inhibiting factors. Geography, especially the Indian Ocean’s choke points and adverse underwater conditions, the Cold War naval presence in the region, technology denial by advanced navies, early force planning, and
exposure to global submarine developments all encouraged submarine acquisition and growth, while procurement fragmentation and reliance on transfer of technology weakened indigenous conventional design capacity. While contrasting SSNs, AIP boats, and conventional submarines, it is a fair argument that nuclear propulsion offers unmatched reach, speed, endurance and operational flexibility, while AIP boats remain highly effective for shorter-range missions. India’s nuclear submarine programme succeeded because it benefited from long-term political support, civilian nuclear expertise, indigenous industrial participation, and an ecosystem that treated submarines as strategic national assets.
