KIMS-COMROKFLT Security Lecture Support

– On June 9, 2023, KIMS sponsored a special security lecture at Commander ROK Fleet, and invited professor Gordon Flake, Founding Chief Executive Officer of Perth USAsia Centre at The University of Western Australia. He gave commanding officers of the Fleet and US naval forces a lecture titled “Maritime Security and Strategic Interests in the Indo-Pacific: Perspectives from Australia’s Indian Ocean Capital”.

– At this lecture, professor Flake emphasized that South Korea ought to satisfy international community’s expectation – which is to show suitable engagement as a democracy – as the US-China rivalry continues to rise up.

– He also argued expanding naval diplomacy with countries beyond Northeast Asian region that are sharing common values of international order based on freedom and rule of law will be much more profitable for South Korea, in terms of contributing to global maritime security, enhancing national prestige, and strengthening military deterrence against North Korea’s provocations.
